We're hoping to do a trip for days.. Renting a car would be possible if necessary or we could take buses. I find the temperature on the coast to be too hot for hiking, but in spite of that, I have done a lot of walking along the highway and local roads near towns that I have visited. Santa Catarina Juquila is about two hours away, to the northwest; colectivos or camiones to Rio Grande; and then colectivos or camionetas; many hotels available. You might also have a look at the tomzap website; lots of photos and commentary, if somewhat dated.
I am also a fan of some of the beaches east and west of Puerto. There is a decent hike leaving from behind the chapel in San Isidro Llano Grande and heading to the beach. Tututepec has a community museum that is worth a visit. You may have to call the number on the front door to have them let you in.
You can catch a collectivo from Santa Rosa. There are hikes around Tututepec that you might like. You'd need to ask a collectivo driver or someone in the Presidencia to find you a guide. The presidencia in Tutu itself is worth a visit. They've recently completed these gorgeous mural paintings inside the building. To the east of Puerto, the Agua Blanca beach is fantastic. There is also the cridera de iguanas just outside of town. That's fun for an hour or so. There are hikes around Nopala and Rio Grande, including at least one to a waterfall in both towns.
None of these towns have much tourist infrastructure, so you'll need to ask around to find people who can take you. Taxi drivers are often a good source of information, as are the owners of local comedores. I remember at the palacio municipales in each of Santos Reyes Nopala and Villa de Tututepec de Melchor Ocampo, there were men with guns for hire. Besides finding whoever it is you re looking for, I m sure they would, for a fee, act as armed escorts for your local excursions.
